LIVING BY NUMBERS
This article contains information about the production cycles of the various industries/farms/workshops etc. Times given are generally the amount of time it takes to produce goods excluding the time taken to collect raw materials and/or to deliver the goods to the stockpile/armoury/granary. This time taken collecting/delivering will have a major impact on how quickly you are able to produce goods/food. An efficient layout where the workers have to walk a minimum distance will give you much higher production numbers, but since space is often at a premium around the stockpile/armoury/granary then choices about priorities often have to be made.

Food Sources

Apples Once you place an apple orchard the trees start growing and bearing fruit even before a worker arrives there. Fruit is ready to be picked in just less than 3 months, and there are 4, sometimes 5, harvests per year. The orchard worker picks the apples and delivers 3 units at a time to the granary.

With an orchard extremely close to the granary, i.e. directly adjacent to the granary and the orchard next to that on the granary entrance side, then an orchard worker is able to pick 2 crops of 3 units each harvest. Any further away and only 1 crop per harvest is possible.

This means that it is possible to get 24, occasionally 30, apples from an orchard in a year with the optimum placement. Slightly further out and the yield will be reduced to 12, occasionally 15. If the orchard is so far from the granary that the worker cannot pick, deliver and return within the time it takes for the next crop to reach maturity then the trees turn brown and that crop is lost.

Orchard workers will also pick from adjacent orchards if there is no fruit available on theirs at that time.

Orchard workers walk at 50 tiles per month.

Cheese

Cows do not start being born and growing in dairy farms until a worker arrives. Once 3 cows are fully grown then the milking/making cheese cycle starts. The first cheese is ready approx 5 months from when the worker first arrives. After that it takes 2 months for each milking/making cheese cycle, with 3 cheese being delivered to the granary each time. .

If a dairy is directly adjacent to the granary it is therefore possible to produce 18 cheese per year. As the milking cannot commence again until the worker delivers his cheese and returns any extra time taken walking to the granary and back will reduce the number of cycles possible in a year.

If a leather armourer takes a cow for leather no milking will be done until a 3rd cow is produced again.

Wheat

Once a worker arrives at a wheat farm he starts by hoeing the ground, then sows the seeds and waits for it to grow. Once the wheat is grown he harvests it in sections and delivers it 2 units at a time to the stockpile. A full crop is 12 loads, 24 units of wheat.

It takes 18 months minimum for a full crop to be hoed, grown and harvested if the farm is directly adjacent to the stockpile. If the farm is further away it will take longer. Any part of the crop still unharvested 24 months after hoeing starts will die.

Wheat farm workers walk at 33.3 tiles per month

Hops

Once a worker arrives at a hops farm he hoes the ground, sows the plants and then waits for them to grow. Once they are fully grown he picks them in sections and delivers them to the stockpile 1 unit at a time. A full crop is 4 units of hops.

It takes approx 13 months minimum for a full crop to be grown and harvested if the farm is adjacent to the stockpile. If the farm is further away it will take longer. Hops not harvested within approx 15 months will start to die, meaning that it is very important that hops farms are not too far from the stockpile if you wish to get a full harvest.

Food Processing

Mill

Mills have 3 workers who run back and forth collecting 1 unit of wheat from the stockpile and returning it as 1 sack of flour after processing. A mill reasonably close to the stockpile can produce 32 flour in a year.

Mill boys run at 66.6 tiles per month when they are empty handed, 50 tiles per month when carrying wheat/flour.

Bakeries

Bakeries turn 1 sack of flour into 8 loaves of bread. It takes approximately 2 months for them to bake the bread. It will take approx 1 further month for a bakery right next to both the stockpile and the granary to deliver the bread to the granary, head to the stockpile and pick up more flour and return to the bakery. Therefore it is theoretically possible for a bakery to produce 32 bread in a year from 4 sacks of flour, but usually less production would be expected.

Bakers walk at 33.3 tiles per month.

Beer

It takes approx 4 months for a brewery worker to turn 1 unit of hops into a barrel of beer.

Brewers walk at 25 tiles per month.

Industry

Stone and Oxen

Stone quarries need 3 workers and produce stone at the rate of approx 20 stone per year. The stone is placed onto a stone pile, which can hold up to 48 stone. If the stone pile reaches the maximum 48 stone then work is stopped until some is picked up. Oxen tethers are needed to carry the stone to the stockpile

The Oxen tether workers walk to the nearest stone pile with stone and collect stone one at a time and carry them back to their tether. Once they have a full load of 8 stone they take them to the stockpile. If the tether is directly next to the stone pile it is collecting stone from then it takes approx 4 months for them to collect a full load. The further away the stone is of course the longer it takes. If the closest stone pile has no stone then they will travel to the next closest one with stone.

Add in the time taken to deliver the stone to the stockpile and return and you will nearly always need more than one oxen tether per stone quarry.

Stone Quarry masons walk to their quarry at a speed of 33.3 tiles per month. Oxen Team Quarry workers walk at 25 tiles per month.

Pitch Rigs

A pitch rig takes approximately 2 months to produce 1 jug of pitch. There is only 1 worker who produces the pitch, he then carries it to the stockpile and returns to start producing the next jug.

Pitchmen walk at 50 tiles per month.

Iron

Iron mines have 2 workers. The first miner goes down the mine, gets the ore and then comes back up and puts the ore in the furnace. He then returns down the mine to start again. The 2nd miner waits for the iron block to come from the furnace and then carries it to the stockpile. Each block takes 2 months total to be produced. If the 2nd miner is not back before more blocks are produced then they form a pile of up to 8 blocks. Once 8 blocks are stored miner 1 stops working until the pile is back down to 6 blocks.

Miners walk at 33 tiles per month.

Trees and Wood

When chopping wood woodcutters walk to the nearest tree, chop it down and then take one log and return to their hut with it. They then return to the tree, cut another log, again return to their hut, then back to the tree for a 3rd time. When they have 3 logs in their hut they then proceed to turn them into planks of wood before taking the full load which is 12 planks of wood to the stockpile.

Because they make 3 trips from their hut to the tree they are chopping per load it is more important they be close to trees than to the stockpile. It takes approx 3 months for them to cut up a full load of wood if the tree is directly next to their hut, you must then add in the time it takes them to walk to the stockpile and return. As they cut down the closest trees to them then the time taken will increase.

Woodcutters walk at 33.3 tiles per month.

Notes on Trees

There are 4 types of trees in the game, Pine, Oak, Chestnut and Birch. Mature Pine, Oak and Chestnut trees all provide 3 loads of wood, i.e. 9 logs which is 36 planks. Birch trees only provide 2/3 of a load, i.e. 2 logs which is 8 planks. The stump is removed from the ground when the last log is taken.

Once a tree is cut down it does not regrow, forest growth is achieved by mature trees seeding. Every one or two years a new baby tree will appear a short distance away from the mature tree. It will then grow to maturity in 3 stages for Pine, Oak and Chestnut, taking approximately 3 to 4 years. Birch trees grow to maturity in approx 1 ½ to 2 years and only have one immature stage which provides 1 log, 4 planks of wood. Immature Pine, Oak and Chestnut trees provide 1 log, 4 planks in their first stage, 2 logs, 8 planks in their 2nd and 4 logs, 16 planks in their 3rd stage.

Trees also occasionally die, they lose their leaves and are ignored by the woodcutters, approximately 2 years later they disappear. This appears to be a random event, unconnected to the tree's age.

Arms and armour

Fletcher

Bows - requires 2 wood
The Fletcher walks to the stockpile, picks up 1 wood and returns to his workshop, he then makes another trip to the stockpile to get the 2nd plank of wood. Once back he starts producing the bow, this takes approximately 2 months. He then carries it to the armoury and returns to his workshop to start all over again.

Crossbows - requires 3 wood
Same process as for bows but with an extra plank of wood required meaning an extra trip to the stockpile. The production time is also approx 2 months.

Note unlike all the other weapons producers the Fletcher will not collect his first wood while returning from the armoury, this can slow down the production time compared to other weapon producers.

Fletchers walk at 25 tiles per month.

Poleturner

Spears - requires 1 wood
The Poleturner walks to the stockpile, collects 1 wood and returns and starts making the spear. Producing a spear takes less than 1 month. He takes the spear to the armoury then goes to the stockpile to collect another plank of wood before returning to his workshop and producing the next spear.

Pikes - requires 2 wood
The Poleturner walks to the stockpile, collects 1 wood, returns to his workshop and then returns to the stockpile for the 2nd wood. Upon returning this time he starts producing the pike which takes approximately 2 months. He then takes this to the armoury and from there heads to the stockpile to pick up the 1st piece of wood for the next pike.

Poleturners walk at 25 tiles per month.

Blacksmith

Swords - requires 1 iron
The Blacksmith walks to the stockpile, collects the iron and return to his workshop. It takes approximately 2 months for him to produce a sword. He then takes it to the armoury and from there heads to the stockpile for another block of iron.

Maces - requires 1 iron
Same process as for swords, it also takes approximately 2 months to produce a mace.

Blacksmiths walk at 25 tiles per month.

Leather Tanner

Leather Armour - requires 1 cow for 3 sets of leather armour
The Tanner walks to the closest dairy farm with a cow, collects it and returns to her workshop. She then kills the cow and goes into her workshop to begin producing leather armour. It takes a bit less than 3 months for her to produce each armour. She then takes it to the armoury and returns to her workshop to begin producing the next armour. Once 3 armours have been produced she will collect another cow.

Tanners walk at 25 tiles per month.

Armourer

Armour - requires 1 iron
The Armourer walks to the stockpile, collects a block of iron and returns and starts producing armour. It takes approximately 2 months to produce each set of armour. He takes it to the armoury then proceeds to the stockpile to collect a block of iron for the next armour.

Armourers walk at 25 tiles per month.

Hint: Keep bears away:
When bears kill civilians, your popularity decreases. To avoid this, simply build a wood fence around a bear when it appears.

Hint: Keep catapult or trebuchet firing:
When your catapult or trebuchet is out of ammunition and you have no stone in your stockpile it is not necessary to build another one. You can still fire it if you click on the "Launch Cow" button and click a wall or something else. Immediately after the order is issued, click "Stop" and the catapult or trebuchet will fire a rock. Repeat this process to keep firing. You have to have cows remaining to do this.
